Mom came to visit at Christmas.  On Christmas Eve we went up to Serre do Cume, which is 525 meters high.  I put the camera on the roof of the car and took our picture.

On the way back home we had to stop because there was a rope across the road, with a horse tied to it.  Mom was going to lift up the rope so I could drive under it, but then a Portuguese guy got out of that truck and chased the horse back across the road with a big rock.  Those Portuguese are clever!

After our trip it was time to make the Fattigmand.  These are Norwegian cookies and if you want to know more about them, go here.

Tanya rolled out the dough.  She gets serious about her dough rolling.  Don't mess with her.  She also did some frying but those pictures are just too disturbing...

After cutting and forming the cookies, Mom did some frying, too.  She was quite happy about it.  You can see the cookies on the counter there.

Meanwhile, Gus and Verrucka were waiting patiently for Santa Claus.  And Fattigmand.

The Iron Chef asks, "Whose Fattigman are the best?"  Hmm, looks like a tie, especially since they all came from the same batch.

Gus and Verrucka finally got their cookies, although I'm not sure that they fully appreciated the value.

Since the cookie making was a tie, Tanya challenged Mom to a game of Jenga on Christmas day.  The suspense was thick...

This picture was taken just moments before the mighty tower collapsed.  Alas, Jenga towers were not meant to stand forever.  Was it Tanya's error, or was it simply fate?

So, you think you're so good at Jenga, time for the Hearts challenge!  It was a rough game.  I'm not sure who won but I can tell you who lost (hint: he's not in the picture).

The day after Christmas, and it was time for a tour of the island.  We went to the swimming area in Biscoitos, where we did not swim because it was cold and the waves were huge.

This was a great place to take a picture until about a minute later when we both had wet feet thanks to that darn sneaky ocean!

It is said that great wisdom can be gained from studying these lava rocks at the edge of the sea.  It seems I didn't study hard enough, but I think it worked for Tanya.

Next we headed inland for a hike in the jungle.  Axel Rose was not there, but if he had been you know what he would've said.

Monte Brazil was next on the agenda, where Mom practiced for her future modeling career in front of a nice view of Angra do Heroismo.

We brought some bread to feed the ducks.

Finally, we ended up at the sulfur pits, where steam and heat rise from the ground.  This is a stark reminder that we're living on a volcanic island.  Tanya contemplates a voyage to the center of the Earth.

We had a great time with Mom and we're thankful she didn't fall into a sulfur pit.
