(May 2004) About 50 miles northeast of Fairbanks is the
Angel Rocks trailhead. On this day we hiked the 3.5 mile loop. |
The view from about halfway up. This is about as
rugged as the mountains get in the Fairbanks area. |

Near the top there are a lot of rock outcroppings, like this
one, that people like to climb on. We did some free climbing but
nothing really serious. |
True to her fiercely competitive nature, Tanya always has
to be the first one to the top. Verrucka gives her tough
competition. |

Looks like Tanya won. Mostly it was because of
Verrucka's total inability to climb steep rocks. Stupid dog. |
(Aug 2004) The next trail we hit was Granite Tors, about
40 miles from Fairbanks on the same road. The trail was
"closed" due to nearby fires, but what does "closed"
really mean anyway? |

This was Gus' first real hike. He did well, and as you
can see in this picture he learned quickly how to forage for food. |
After her humiliating defeat in the race to the top of
Angel Rocks, Verrucka set out to prove that she is still top dog by
climbing a tree. |

As for me, I only climb the trees after they fall
down. There was a real bridge further down the trail, but why use
that when there's a great log right here? |
As we got closer to the top, the smoke from the fires
nearby got thicker and thicker. We actually began to see freshly
burned parts of the forest. |

At the tope of the first ridge, the smoke was burning our
eyes and lungs, so we decided it was time to turn back. This picture
was taken approximately two miles in. |
