| If you don't already know the rules
of the street bullfight, go to the Vila Nova
page to learn more about it! |
This bullfight in Porto Martins was rather
unique because it took place at the port. Rather than running up
and down the street, the bulls ran around in this square usually
reserved for boats. |
The ocean side of the square is pretty, but there's not
really anywhere to run. Fortunately the bulls usually stay off the
lava rocks! |
Here's a shot of the bull fresh out of the
box! There are usually four bulls, but they only release them one
at a time. |
The locals know the safest place to watch from is the
roof. |
As usual, out comes the blanket! This guy
did a really good job of getting the bull angry. |
He did such a good job, in fact, that the bull decided
to run up the street and chase some more people around. Somebody
up there got hit, but I didn't quite catch it with the camera. |
I guess the bull got a little irritated with all the
people yelling at him from the rooftop. He knocked down the
barrier on the first floor and started tearing stuff up! It took
four guys with funny hats to pull him out. |
Nice shot, huh? Problem is, shortly after
this was taken the bull jumped that wall and came after ME! Well
at least now I can say I've run with the bulls! |
Another unique thing about this bullfight is that the
people try to get the bull in the water. The proper way to do this
is to get him so mad he chases you down the pier... |
...and then jump off the end with him right
behind you. Either this bull was too smart or he had antilock
brakes, because a lot of Portuguese went in the water and he did not! |
