August 2005

Welcome to Praiafest!  This is the largest festival of the year on the island.  Here is the main street in Praia.

The beach is next to the main street.  All the people gather here in the afternoon because there's a bullfight!  Imagine that.

The Portuguese military gave a demonstration where they dropped some guy into the water from their one helicopter.  Ha-ha!  No, seriously, I think they really have two.

Then the bull came out.  You'd really think they'd get tired of this after a while, but no, the locals just love getting drunk and maimed.

Making friends with the locals.  Sagres is one of the local beers, and really helps you make a lot of friends.

A bunch of restaurants from the mainland had tents set up along the waterfront.  As night fell, we went to sample some food.

Rua da Jesus is a walking-only street in the middle of the city.  This is where all the good shops are.  Everybody walks around here at night even though the shops are closed because the lights make it look cool.

A parade, with a marching band.  The guy in the front with the spear is supposed to keep the photographers out of the street.  Yikes!

Okay now I just love this picture.  Here's one to make into a wallpaper, seriously.  This is Praia, during the festival, from the hillside.

Fireworks over Priaia Bay.  It's little blurry, but I've never shot fireworks with a night lens before so give me a break!
