Here is our house, with Tanya, Mom, and me in front.  Mom came to visit for Christmas. No, the house is not crooked, but I think the camera tripod was.

Here's our house from the side, where it doesn't look quite so small.  It's not painted yet because it's new and the concrete has to set for two years before it can be painted.  Notice the ocean at the end of the street.

It's really hard to take a picture of the inside of your house.  Here's the living room, complete with government furniture.  At least the rug is ours.

I don't know why this picture is so blurry, but at least you can see the stairs.  Tanya got creative with the Christmas lights.  Verrucka likes it, too.

Here's Tanya holding a stained-glass snowflake that she made for our landlord as a Christmas present.  She didn't make it in the kitchen, but she's standing there in this picture, so now you can see the kitchen.

The infamous Lajes Field.  It's not an "air base" because until a few years ago it had Army and Navy on it, too.  That's the runway going all the way across the picture and you can see the ATC tower up on the hill.  The whole base is only about 2 square miles..

A high point in the middle of the island, known as Serre do Cume.  You can see the rock walls the farmers build to separate their fields.  Also, you can see the islands of Sao Jorge and Pico in the distance.

The cows are everywhere, even at the top of Serre do Cume.  They're heading up to the trough to get some water after a hard day of grazing and mooing.

Yes, the cows are even in the streets.  It's very common to encounter herds of cattle while driving, and you just sort of have to work your way through them.

Praia da Vitoria is the second largest city on the island, and only about a five-minute drive from the base.  Looks real big, doesn't it?

Angra do Heroismo is the largest city on the island.  It's hard to get the whole thing into a picture from the hilltop so I went for the artistic approach instead.

Oh man, this guy is such a bad-ass!  In the summer time this is a swimming area, but I don't think I'd want to swim here in the winter.

Tanya gains inspiration from the waves while standing on a platform that will be filled with Speedo-wearing, sunbathing, Europeans this summer.
